Taking care of the details

You need to tie every rig you construct — simple or complex — as if the rig is going to catch the fish of a lifetime!

All too often a really big fish grabs a rig intended for much smaller fare. This commonly happens when fishing for bait and a large predator grabs either the hook or one of the hooked and struggling baits. Equally, big mulloway or jewfish are known to grab tiny bait originally intended for whiting, or hefty Murray cod are tempted by small trout lures.

If you’re haphazard in your preparations, the big fish is sure to end up as another ‘one that got away’ story. On the other hand, if you tie each knot carefully and check the working end of the line regularly for damage or weak spots, you’re bound to have at least a fighting chance of success.

Over the years, anglers land a range of incredibly big fish on ultra-light line and tiny hooks because the individual incorporates the right combination of a carefully made rig, cool-headed patience, skill and luck.
